The Indian automotive landscape has officially shifted from a market of “cars” to a market of “SUVs,” and no manufacturer is reaping the rewards quite like Mahindra & Mahindra. As the curtains fall on the financial year 2025-26, Mahindra has delivered a masterclass in growth, recording total passenger vehicle sales of 60,272 units in March 2026 alone—a massive 25.4% year-on-year jump.

But the real story isn’t just the total volume; it’s the specific mix of “Classic” ruggedness and “Born Electric” innovation that has allowed Mahindra to solidify its iron grip on the third-place spot in the Indian market.

The “Big Three” Stalwarts: Scorpio, Thar, and Bolero

While new tech often grabs the headlines, the backbone of Mahindra’s success remains its trio of legendary nameplates, which accounted for more than half of its total volumes this month.

    • The Scorpio Dynasty (14,578 units): The Scorpio brand, encompassing both the N and the Classic, remains the undisputed king of the lineup. Despite being one of the oldest names in the portfolio, it saw a 4.78% growth, proving that the “Big Daddy of SUVs” still has no real rival when it comes to road presence.
    • The Thar & Roxx Combo (10,872 units): The introduction of the 5-door Thar Roxx has been a literal game-changer. Sales for the Thar brand surged by 21.6% YoY, as the SUV transitioned from a weekend “lifestyle” vehicle to a primary family car for thousands of Indian households.
    • The Bolero Utility (9,788 units): A testament to rural and semi-urban reliability, the Bolero continues to defy aging cycles, posting a healthy 21.8% increase over last year.

XUV Momentum: Digital Luxury for the Masses

The XUV series is where Mahindra’s tech-first strategy is paying off. The XUV 7XO (the successor to the 700) recorded 9,210 units, benefiting from the recent 20,000-delivery milestone celebrations. Meanwhile, the compact XUV 3XO emerged as the fastest-growing model in the stable, jumping 30.3% to hit 9,199 units, largely thanks to its segment-first panoramic sunroof and Level 2 ADAS features.

The Electric Pivot: BE 6 and XEV 9S

Perhaps the most surprising takeaway from the March 2026 breakup is the performance of the “Born Electric” portfolio. While the older XUV400 saw a sharp 50% decline, the new-generation EVs are gaining rapid traction:

    • BE 6: This model posted a staggering 60.06% YoY growth, proving that Indian buyers are ready for radical, EV-only designs.
    • XEV 9S: The brand’s new flagship electric SUV recorded 3,254 units, anchoring Mahindra as the second-largest electric carmaker in the country this month.

    The Road Ahead for FY27

With a total annual volume of 6,60,276 SUVs for the full fiscal year, Mahindra has set a high bar for itself. As it prepares to launch the Scorpio-N facelift later this year, the company’s focus on “authentic SUVs” seems to be exactly what the Indian consumer is looking for.
