The “New Class” has officially arrived. On March 18, 2026, BMW pulled the covers off the all-new BMW i3 electric sedan, the second production model to be built on the revolutionary Neue Klasse architecture. While the i3 nameplate was once associated with a quirky city hatchback, it has now been reborn as a high-tech, long-range powerhouse that previews the future of the legendary 3 Series.

Launching initially in the i3 50 xDrive guise, this sedan isn’t just a step forward for BMW—it’s a technological leap that puts the brand at the forefront of the premium EV segment.

Breaking the Range Barrier: 900km on a Single Charge

The headline figure that has the industry talking is the i3’s efficiency. Thanks to its sleek “2.5-box” design and optimized aerodynamics, the i3 achieves a provisional WLTP range of up to 900 km.

This massive range is made possible by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which transitions from prismatic cells to new 46mm diameter cylindrical cells. These cells offer 20% higher energy density and, when combined with the 108.7 kWh battery pack and a cell-to-pack design, allow the i3 to travel nearly 100 km further than its SUV sibling, the iX3.

Performance: “Heart of Joy” and 469 PS

The i3 50 xDrive features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup delivering a combined 345 kW (469 PS) and 645 Nm of torque. However, the real magic lies in the software.

  • The “Heart of Joy”: This is BMW’s new super-brain—a centralized high-performance computer that integrates powertrain, braking, and steering. It reacts 10 times faster than previous systems, promising the “sheer driving pleasure” BMW is known for, but with millisecond-precise electric torque vectoring.
  • Ultra-Fast Charging: Utilizing an 800-volt architecture, the i3 supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. This allows drivers to add 400 km of range in just 10 minutes—roughly the time it takes to grab a coffee.

A Futuristic, Pillar-to-Pillar Cabin

Inside, the i3 marks the end of the traditional dashboard. The highlight is the BMW Panoramic Vision, a display that projects critical driving information across the entire width of the lower windshield. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and an AI-powered personal assistant integrated with Amazon Alexa+ LLM for natural, conversational control.

The interior also leans heavily into sustainability, featuring Econeer seat covers made from 100% recycled polyester and a high concentration of secondary aluminum in its 21-inch aero wheels.

India Launch and Availability

Production of the BMW i3 is scheduled to begin at the Munich plant in August 2026, with global deliveries starting shortly after in the autumn. While an official India date hasn’t been set, the iX3 SUV is slated for an early 2027 arrival, making a late 2027 India launch for the i3 highly probable.

With a starting price expected to hover around the ₹1.16 Crore mark in India, the i3 is set to compete directly with the Tesla Model 3 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA EV.
