The landscape of affordable electric mobility in India has undergone a massive shift today, February 20, 2026. Tata Motors has officially launched the Punch.ev Facelift, introducing a first-in-segment Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model that brings the upfront cost down to a staggering ₹6.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
By separating the battery cost from the vehicle price, Tata is aiming for direct price parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) hatchbacks, making the switch to electric more accessible than ever before.
Decoding the BaaS Pricing
Under the new “Freedom to Drive” initiative, buyers can choose between two primary ownership paths:
- BaaS Model: The vehicle starts at ₹6.49 lakh, with a fixed battery usage rental of ₹2.6 per kilometer. This is ideal for urban commuters who want low upfront costs and predictable running expenses.
- Standard Purchase: For those who prefer traditional ownership, the Punch.ev starts at ₹9.69 lakh (ex-showroom) with the battery included, topping out at ₹12.59 lakh for the flagship trim.
Enhanced Performance and Range
The 2026 update isn’t just about pricing; the hardware has received a significant boost.
- New 40 kWh Battery: Joining the existing 30 kWh unit, the new Long Range (LR) variant features a 40 kWh prismatic cell pack, delivering an ARAI-certified range of 468 km (with a real-world estimate of 355 km).
- Rapid Charging: The updated system now supports 65 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to jump from 20% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
- Punchy Dynamics: The motor now produces 127 BHP (95 kW), enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in under 9 seconds—making it the quickest micro-SUV in its class.
Design and “Simply Clever” Interiors
Visually, the Punch.ev Facelift aligns with the latest Tata “Persona” design language.
- The Exterior: It gains a seamless connected LED DRL bar, a redesigned bumper with a cleaner air intake, and new 16-inch aero-optimized alloy wheels. Three new colors have been added: Bengal Rouge, Caramel, and Fearless Yellow.
- The Cabin: The interior feels significantly more premium with a 10.25-inch central touchscreen and a matching 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.
- Premium Tech: Standard safety now includes 6 airbags, while higher trims boast ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and i-High Beam Assist, which automatically dips the lights for oncoming traffic.
The Verdict
With the BaaS model, the Tata Punch.ev is no longer just an alternative to the MG Comet or Citroen eC3; it is now a threat to petrol-powered bestsellers like the Maruti Swift and Hyundai Exter. By offering SUV styling, a 5-star safety pedigree, and a “pay-as-you-go” battery plan, Tata Motors has effectively removed the “EV tax” for the Indian middle class.
