Kia India has officially disrupted the sub-four-metre SUV segment with the launch of its Model Year 2026 (MY26) update for the Sonet. In a strategic move to counter rising traffic congestion and the resulting shift in consumer behavior, Kia has introduced new entry-level automatic variants that make “two-pedal” driving significantly more accessible.

The headline of this update is the pricing: the 2026 Kia Sonet is now the only SUV in its class to offer a sophisticated Diesel 6-speed Torque Converter and a 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) at an ex-showroom price starting below the ₹10 lakh mark.

Breaking the Price Barrier: New Automatic Variants

Previously, buyers looking for a diesel automatic or a performance-oriented DCT had to climb the variant ladder to the HTX or GTX trims, often pushing the budget well beyond ₹12 lakh. With the MY26 refresh, Kia has democratized these powertrains:

    • Diesel 6AT HTE (O): The new entry point for the diesel automatic is now the HTE (O) trim, priced at ₹9.78 lakh (ex-showroom). This represents a massive reduction in the entry price for those seeking the fuel efficiency of diesel combined with the smoothness of a traditional torque converter.
    • Turbo Petrol 7DCT HTK (O): For those prioritizing performance, the 1.0-litre T-GDi engine paired with the 7-speed DCT is now available in the HTK (O) trim for ₹9.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Why This Update Matters for Urban Commuters

The expansion of the automatic lineup is a direct response to the “stop-and-go” nature of modern Indian metros. By introducing these transmissions in the HTE (O) and HTK (O) trims, Kia is targeting first-time SUV buyers who previously had to settle for manual gearboxes or less refined AMTs (Automated Manual Transmissions) due to budget constraints.

The Diesel 6AT remains a favorite for long-distance cruisers, offering an ARAI-certified mileage of 18.6 kmpl, while the 7-speed DCT continues to lead the segment in terms of lightning-fast gear shifts and enthusiast appeal.

Fresh Aesthetics: The “Magma Red” Debut

Beyond the mechanical additions, Kia has introduced a striking new exterior color called Magma Red. This vibrant, youthful shade joins the existing palette, which includes popular options like Pewter Olive, Imperial Blue, and the premium Matte Graphite found on the X-Line. The 2026 model also retains its high-tech cabin, featuring the dual 10.25-inch screen setup, Level 1 ADAS, and the ventilated front seats that have become a hallmark of the Sonet’s value proposition.

    Competition and Market Impact

With this pricing strategy, the Sonet takes a direct shot at the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. While rivals offer automatic options, Kia’s decision to provide a “proper” automatic (non-AMT) at this price point sets a new benchmark for the segment.

As the fiscal year 2025-26 draws to a close, this update ensures the Sonet maintains its momentum, particularly in Tier-1 cities where automatic adoption has now surpassed 40% of total sales.
