The Indian premium SUV space is experiencing a massive identity shift. While pure electric vehicles (EVs) continue to grow, a massive section of buyers remains hesitant to fully commit due to lingering highway range anxiety. Recognizing this gap, global EV giant BYD is shaking up its “electric-only” Indian portfolio. An undisguised test mule of the BYD Sealion 6 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) was officially spied testing on Indian roads, signaling an aggressive push into the country’s booming hybrid ecosystem.

First showcased locally to gauge consumer interest, this mid-size premium SUV aims to bridge the gap between frugal city commuting and limitless highway touring.

The Best of Both Worlds: Dual-Motor PHEV Technology

Unlike standard strong hybrids that charge via the engine, the Sealion 6 is a true Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). It carries a sizeable 18.3 kWh proprietary BYD Blade LFP battery that can be plugged into an external charger.

    • Pure EV Mode: For daily city commutes, the SUV offers a highly practical electric-only range of 80 km. This means you can drive to work and back entirely on battery power without burning a single drop of petrol.
    • The 1,000 km Club: When the battery drops below a certain threshold, the highly efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine seamlessly kicks in to power the wheels and replenish the battery. Combined, a full tank and a full charge yield an astronomical total driving range of over 1,092 km, completely eliminating the concept of range anxiety.

A Traditional Silhouette Loaded with Premium Tech

While the recently launched Sealion 7 boasts a sporty, coupe-like roofline, the Sealion 6 adopts a more traditional, imposing, and upright SUV silhouette. Spanning 4.77 meters in length with a generous 2,765 mm wheelbase, it promises exceptional cabin real estate.

Inside, the cabin looks identical to BYD’s luxury line. The dashboard is centered around their signature 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment system, flanked by a crisp 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. Luxury amenities are packed to the brim, featuring a 10-speaker Infinity premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, powered and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS safety suite.

The Competitive Grid: Taking on the Hybrid Kings

When it goes on sale, the Sealion 6 will mark a major expansion plan for BYD India as it establishes its first non-pure EV foothold. It will enter a highly lucrative pricing bracket, targeting an estimated introductory price of ₹35 lakh to ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom).

This positions it as an extremely sophisticated alternative to popular premium 3-row hybrids like the Toyota Innova Hycross and the upcoming Hyundai Creta/Seltos strong hybrids. Additionally, it will lock horns directly with JSW Motors’ upcoming plug-in hybrid SUVs, creating a brand-new sub-segment of luxury PHEVs.

    Expected Launch Timeline

With testing mules now running completely undisguised on public roads, industry insiders expect BYD to officially launch the Sealion 6 by the final quarter of the current calendar year.

For buyers looking for the luxury of a premium SUV, the silent efficiency of an EV, and the uncompromised range of an ICE vehicle, the wait might finally be over.
