For anyone who grew up watching Indian roads in the 1990s, the name “Tata Sierra” evokes pure nostalgia. With its distinctive three-door design and massive, wrap-around rear glass windows, it was a vehicle far ahead of its time. Fast forward to today, and Tata Motors is officially turning that nostalgia into a high-tech reality.
During a recent media briefing, Tata Motors’ MD & CEO, Shailesh Chandra, confirmed that the highly anticipated Tata Sierra EV is locked in for a launch during the second quarter of FY2026–27—placing its grand debut right in the heart of the festive season window between July and September 2026.
The Design: Honoring the 90s Icon
The production-ready design of the Sierra EV leans heavily into the DNA of the original masterwork. It successfully retains the squared-off, muscular stance and, most importantly, the iconic large rear glass canopy that defines its silhouette.
However, the look is entirely updated for the modern era. Built on Tata’s dedicated Acti.ev+ architecture, it features an ultra-clean front fascia with a slim, blanked-off grille and a signature end-to-end connected LED DRL strip.
Under the Hood: Dual Batteries and AWD Capability
To keep the model highly competitive across different price brackets, Tata is planning a dual-battery strategy borrowed from its existing platform successes:
- The Medium Range (55 kWh): Sourced from the Curvv EV, this setup is tuned for daily city commutes and efficient highway cruising.
- The Long Range (65 kWh): Rumored to deliver a highly practical, real-world driving range of over 500 km on a single charge.
Power will be delivered through a standard Front-Wheel Drive (2WD) single-motor setup. However, for true SUV enthusiasts, Tata has heavily teased a dual-motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration for higher-spec trims, promising genuine off-road capability that honors the Sierra legacy.
Step Into the Cockpit: A Triple-Screen Experience
Inside the cabin, the Sierra EV shifts from retro charm to an absolute digital sanctuary. Recent spy shots of road-testing mules reveal a premium, lounge-like layout highlighted by a futuristic triple-screen dashboard:
- A central 12.3-inch floating infotainment touchscreen.
- A 12.3-inch digital driver’s instrument cluster.
- A dedicated secondary screen directly in front of the passenger.
Additional premium amenities include dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) package for top-tier safety.
Market Positioning and The Battleground
The Sierra EV is a crucial piece of Tata’s aggressive electrification roadmap, which includes dropping four major EV facelifts and two entirely new nameplates over the next year. Positioned safely between the Curvv EV and the flagship Harrier EV, the Sierra EV is expected to sport an aggressive introductory price tag ranging from ₹17.50 lakh to ₹25.00 lakh (ex-showroom).
