The Indian mid-size SUV segment is about to get a lot more technical. On April 10, 2026, an undisguised Jaecoo J7 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) was exclusively spotted being transported on a flatbed in India. This sighting follows months of rumors regarding a joint venture between the Indian conglomerate JSW Group and the Chinese automotive giant Chery.

While the market is currently flooded with “strong hybrids” that can’t be plugged in, the Jaecoo J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) brings a true PHEV architecture to the table—offering a “best of both worlds” solution for the Indian buyer.

The PHEV Advantage: 106 KM on Pure Electricity

Unlike the Maruti Grand Vitara or Toyota Hyryder, which rely on small batteries to assist the engine, the Jaecoo J7 features a substantial 18.3 kWh LFP battery.

This allows for a pure electric range of 106 km (NEDC). For the average Indian commuter, this means daily office runs can be completed without burning a single drop of petrol. When the battery depletes, the system seamlessly switches to its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which, when combined with a full tank of fuel, delivers a staggering total range of 1,200 km.

Performance: 330 HP and All-Terrain Tech

The J7 isn’t just about efficiency; it’s a performance powerhouse. The “Super Hybrid System” combines the turbo engine with a high-output electric motor to produce a system total of approximately 330 hp and 525 Nm of torque.

    • Transmission: It utilizes a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) designed for smooth power delivery.
    • ARDIS System: The SUV is equipped with the All-Road Drive Intelligent System, offering seven distinct driving modes (Sand, Mud, Snow, etc.) that react to surface changes in just 0.1 seconds.

    A “Mini-Range Rover” Aesthetic

Visually, the J7 spotted in India carries a sophisticated, boxy silhouette that many are already calling the “affordable Range Rover.”

    • Exterior: Highlights include a massive vertical-slat grille, flush-fitting electric door handles, and 19-inch aero-optimized alloy wheels.
    • Interior: The cabin is dominated by a portrait-oriented 14.8-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital cluster. Premium touches include a 50W wireless charger, 64-color ambient lighting, and a front center armrest with integrated cooled storage.

    The 2026 Competitive Landscape

The Verdict: Is it Worth the Wait?

With an expected price bracket of ₹28 lakh to ₹35 lakh, the Jaecoo J7 will sit above the Creta/Seltos territory, challenging the likes of the Mahindra XEV 9e and the Tata Harrier EV. For buyers who want the zero-emission benefits of an EV for the city but the long-range security of petrol for highway trips, the J7 PHEV might just be the most “future-proof” SUV in India.
