Lotus is re-embracing the core philosophy laid out by its legendary founder, Colin Chapman. While the British marque has spent recent years expanding into high-tonnage electrification with grand tourers and hyper-SUVs, its latest debut proves it hasn’t forgotten how to build an uncompromised mid-engine driver’s car. Meet the new Lotus Emira 420 Sport—the most powerful, lightest, and aerodynamically advanced iteration of the Emira platform built to date.

Positioned at the absolute peak of the Emira family tree, the 420 Sport acts as a direct link between pure road usability and aggressive track-day performance. Order books have officially opened globally, with the first wave of customer handovers scheduled to kick off in August 2026.

Extracting Maximum Oomph from the AMG Heart

At the core of the Emira 420 Sport lies an upgraded version of the Mercedes-AMG-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged M139 inline-four engine. By optimizing the engine control management and reworking the boost parameters, Lotus has extracted an extra 14 horsepower and 14 lb-ft of torque over the standard base model. This brings the final output to a potent 420 PS (414 bhp) and 500 Nm of torque.

Power is funneled exclusively to the rear wheels via a lightning-fast 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The extra mechanical muscle cuts the 0-100 kmph sprint time down to just 3.9 seconds, making it the fastest four-cylinder production car in the world today and pushing it to a top speed of 299 kmph.

Simplifying and Adding Lightness

True to the Hethel DNA, adding raw horsepower was only half the equation. To truly sharpen the car’s dynamics, Lotus engineers went on an obsessive weight-saving mission. When buyers select the optional Lotus Lightweight Handling Pack, the car sheds a substantial 25 kg of vehicle mass compared to the standard Emira Turbo.

Every component was scrutinized to achieve this reduction. The heavy glass engine window has been replaced by a retro-styled, carbon-fibre louvered tailgate that shaves 4 kg while lowering the car’s center of gravity. The heavy lead-acid starter battery makes way for a compact lithium-ion unit, dropping an additional 12 kg. Finally, a bespoke titanium exhaust system cuts another 6.5 kg from the rear overhang while producing a raw, unrestricted acoustic note at the 7,200 rpm redline.

Aggressive Aero Meets Functional Cooling

The visual changes on the 420 Sport are driven entirely by aerodynamic function. The car introduces an assertive front splitter, deeply sculpted side sills, integrated front wheel arch vents, and an extended rear lip spoiler. Together, these modifications generate an additional 25 kg of high-speed downforce without increasing the car’s standard drag coefficient.

Crucially, thermal management has received a major upgrade to handle the thermal loads of prolonged track use. Airflow to the outboard radiators is up by 15 percent, brake cooling efficiency improves by 10 percent, and exhaust valve cooling airflow jumps by an immense 30 percent. For hard track sessions, drivers can even remove the front number plate and built-in brake duct blanking panels to unlock maximum cooling airflow.

A Pure, Connected Cockpit

The interior transitions into a highly tactile, performance-focused workspace. Drivers interact with a flat-bottomed steering wheel paired with crisp, real carbon-fibre gearshift paddles that offer sharp haptic feedback. The standard 12-way power-adjustable sport seats feature deep bolstering to hold occupants firmly in place through high-G cornering.

To complement the release, Lotus has introduced Tangelo Orange as the exclusive hero paint option—a vivid nod to the brand’s historic palette. Inside, an optional Hand Painted Pack carries this striking orange theme across the air vent surrounds, center console accents, and steering wheel stitching.

Coinciding with the 420 Sport’s debut, Lotus has also introduced a removable tinted glass roof panel across the entire Emira lineup. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Esprit Turbo, this lightweight panel stores neatly behind the front seats in a protective bag, allowing drivers to quickly swap track-focused coupe rigidity for open-air theater.

By pairing a highly adjustable Multimatic suspension setup and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber with an integrated Track Performance telemetry app, the Emira 420 Sport stands out as a purist’s dream. It serves as a reminder that before Lotus embraces an all-electric future, its internal combustion era is going out with an absolute roar.
