For exactly half a century, the three letters “GTI” have represented the pinnacle of accessible, front-wheel-drive internal combustion performance. However, at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, Volkswagen officially turned the page on its iconic legacy. The German automaker pulled the wraps off the near-production ID. Polo GTI—marking the first time in the 50-year history of the hallowed badge that a GTI is powered entirely by electrons instead of petrol.

Built on the highly anticipated, front-wheel-drive MEB+ architecture, this electric hot hatch proves that Volkswagen has no intention of building boring commuter appliances as it transitions away from fossil fuels.

The Numbers: Pocket Rocket Performance

Purists were understandably anxious about an electric GTI, but the specification sheet quells those fears immediately. The vehicle features VW’s new APP290 drive system, sending 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of instant torque exclusively to the front wheels.

Because electric motors do not have to wait for turbochargers to spoil or transmissions to downshift, that 290 Nm of torque hits the pavement instantaneously. The ID. Polo GTI clocks a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 6.8 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 175 km/h.

Battery, Range, and Everyday Usability

Beneath the floorboard sits a 52 kWh lithium-ion NMC battery pack utilizing the group’s unified cell design. This setup delivers a highly practical WLTP driving range of up to 424 km on a single charge. When you do run low, the car supports DC fast charging up to 105 kW, allowing a 10-to-80% top-up in approximately 24 minutes. +1

Furthermore, shifting to an EV platform has radically improved interior space. Because the electric motor modules are incredibly compact, passengers enjoy 19mm more cabin room than the legacy petrol Polo GTI, while cargo capacity has jumped by 25% to a massive 441 litres.

Design: Old-School Soul Meets New-Age Style

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI pays beautiful homage to its ancestors while carving out a futuristic aesthetic. It wears the legendary horizontal red accent line slicing across a closed-off front grille, sitting directly underneath IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps and an illuminated VW badge. The front bumper sports the signature GTI honeycomb mesh structure flanked by motorsport-inspired vertical light strips.

Inside, the cabin is an absolute retro sanctuary. The sport seats are upholstered in a modern interpretation of the classic tartan fabric design, and the 10.25-inch digital cockpit can be toggled into a “Golf I retro display mode,” mimicking the analog dials of the 1976 original.

Global Launch and the Indian Prospect

Pre-sales are scheduled to open in Germany in the Autumn of 2026, with a highly competitive starting price tag of just under €39,000. This places it right at the front of a burgeoning global electric hot hatch trend, ready to square off against the Alpine A290 and Cupra Raval.

As for an Indian arrival? While Volkswagen India is currently prioritizing high-volume localized platforms, the brand has historically used the GTI nameplate as an absolute brand shaper (as seen with the limited-run Polo GTI and the iconic Golf GTI). Given the expanding luxury EV landscape in India, a limited CBU import run of the ID. Polo GTI by late 2027 remains a distinct, highly thrilling possibility.
