The luxury automotive landscape in India has a clear leader, and the numbers for the financial year 2026 (FY26) have made it official. Mercedes-Benz India has recorded its most successful year in history, clocking in a staggering 19,363 units sold. This isn’t just a record; it’s a testament to a strategic pivot toward “Top-End Luxury” (TEV) that is fundamentally reshaping how the Three-Pointed Star operates in the subcontinent.

While the broader market has seen moderate growth, Mercedes-Benz’s focus on vehicles priced above ₹1 crore has paid off handsomely. This ultra-luxury segment grew by 16% this year, now accounting for 27% of the brand’s total sales. It seems the Indian elite isn’t just buying cars; they are investing in exclusive, high-performance status symbols.

Double AMG Trouble: The Performance Push

To celebrate this milestone, Mercedes-Benz India didn’t just share a spreadsheet; they launched two track-ready monsters designed for those who find “standard” luxury a bit too quiet.

    1. Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe Performance Edition (₹1.52 Crore)

The highlight of the launch is the updated GLE 53 Coupe Performance Edition. Priced at a ₹7 lakh premium over the standard model, this edition is all about the “Dynamic Plus” package.

    • Under the Hood: It retains the 435hp, 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
    • The Upgrades: You now get Active Roll Stabilisation (AMG Active Ride Control) and high-performance composite brakes with red calipers as standard.
    • Tech: It features the AMG Track Pace app, allowing drivers to record telemetrics during track days.

    2. Mercedes-AMG A45 S Aero Track Edition (₹87 Lakh)

After a nearly three-year hiatus, the world’s most powerful four-cylinder hatchback is back. The A45 S Aero Track Edition is designed specifically for aerodynamic efficiency.

    • Performance: 421hp and 500Nm of torque, hitting 0-100 kmph in just 3.9 seconds.
    • The Aero Pack: It features a massive fixed rear wing, an enlarged front splitter, and 19-inch forged matte-black wheels.
    • Value: Interestingly, this limited-run model undercuts the 2023 price by roughly ₹5.5 lakh, making it a surprisingly “accessible” entry into the world of pure AMG performance.

    A Strategy of Exclusivity

Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer has been vocal about the company’s “value-led” growth. By de-emphasizing entry-level hatchbacks and sedans, Mercedes-Benz has successfully reduced wait times for its flagship models, though high-demand icons like the AMG G63 still command a wait of up to 12 months.

    SegmentSales Contribution (FY26)Growth YoY
    Top-End Luxury (TEV)27%+16%
    Core Luxury (GLC, E-Class)61%+4%
    Electric Vehicles (BEV)6%+11%

The Verdict: Can Mercedes Maintain the Lead?

While BMW India briefly surpassed Mercedes in Q1 2026 quarterly sales, the full-year crown remains firmly with Stuttgart. With a pipeline of new launches and a charging infrastructure that now supports its growing EV portfolio (like the EQS SUV), Mercedes-Benz is banking on the fact that for the Indian luxury buyer, “exclusivity” is the ultimate currency.
