Volkswagen has officially pulled back the curtain on its most significant electric vehicle for the mass market: the Volkswagen ID Cross. Previewed yesterday, March 18, 2026, in its near-production form, this compact SUV is set to become the electric spiritual successor to the T-Cross (and our local Taigun).

Built on the newly evolved MEB+ platform, the ID Cross is designed to bring premium EV technology down to a more accessible price bracket, with a global starting price targeted at approximately €28,000 (roughly ₹25–28 lakh).

Battery & Range: Two Flavors of Efficiency

Unlike the larger ID.4, the ID Cross focuses on urban agility without sacrificing highway legs. Volkswagen has confirmed two distinct battery architectures to cater to different budgets:

    1. The 37kWh LFP Pack: Aimed at city commuters, this Lithium Iron Phosphate battery offers a forecast WLTP range of 316 km. It comes in two power outputs—116 hp and 133 hp—making it a perfect “second car” for Indian metro households.
    2. The 52kWh NMC Pack: For those with range anxiety, the Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt battery delivers a robust 436 km (WLTP). This variant pumps out a healthy 211 hp and 290 Nm of torque, allowing it to hit a top speed of 160 km/h.

Charging is equally optimized. The 52kWh version supports 105kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10% to 80% top-up in just 24 minutes.

    “Pure Positive” Design & Practicality

The ID Cross debuts Volkswagen’s new “Pure Positive” design language. It trades the aggressive, sharp lines of current SUVs for a “smiling” front fascia, featuring connected LED Matrix headlamps and an illuminated VW logo.

Despite its compact 4.15-metre length, the MEB+ platform allows for incredible interior packaging:

    • Storage: A generous 475-litre boot is complemented by a 22-litre “frunk” under the hood, ideal for storing charging cables.
    • Towing: Surprisingly for its size, the 52kWh variant can tow up to 1,200 kg, making it a versatile companion for weekend getaways.

    A “Feel-Good” Oasis Interior

Inside, the ID Cross borrows luxury features from higher segments. The dashboard is dominated by a 12.9-inch touchscreen running the latest software generation, which thankfully brings back illuminated physical buttons for volume and climate control—a direct response to customer feedback.

A segment-first feature is the inclusion of 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with pneumatic massage functions, paired with a high-end Harman Kardon audio system. For the tech-savvy, it also offers a 10.25-inch digital cockpit and a panoramic sunroof that spans nearly the entire roofline.

    India Launch Context

While the ID Cross is scheduled for its European market launch between September and November 2026, its India entry remains a “high-priority consideration.” Given that Volkswagen India is currently focused on the local assembly of the ID.4, the ID Cross represents the brand’s best chance at a high-volume, locally manufactured EV to rival the likes of the Tata Curvv.ev and the Hyundai Creta EV.
