Volvo Cars has officially announced a significant mid-cycle update for the EX30, its most successful compact electric SUV. Released on February 25, 2026, the new model year (MY2026) aims to solidify the vehicle’s position as a segment leader by introducing a more accessible powertrain and unlocking hardware features that were previously dormant.

The most transformative change is the introduction of a new entry-level “Essential” powertrain. While the previous base model utilized a 200 kW motor, the 2026 refresh debuts a 110 kW (150 hp) rear-mounted electric motor. This unit is paired with a 51 kWh LFP battery, providing a WLTP-certified range of 339 kilometres. By lowering the performance ceiling for urban-centric drivers, Volvo has successfully dropped the entry price, making premium Scandinavian electric mobility accessible to a wider demographic without compromising on safety or build quality.

Turning the EX30 into a Mobile Power Source

One of the most requested features from the EV community is finally here: Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. While early EX30 units were produced with the necessary hardware, the feature was software-locked in most markets.

With the 2026 update, Volvo has officially enabled V2L, allowing owners to use their car’s battery as a mobile power bank. Using a specialized adapter, users can now power external electrical devices such as electric bicycles, camping gear, or even domestic appliances during a power outage. Most importantly, Volvo has confirmed that this feature is not limited to new buyers; existing “hardware-ready” EX30 owners will receive a free Over-the-Air (OTA) update during the summer of 2026 to enable this functionality.

User Experience and Software 2.0

Feedback from early adopters regarding the EX30’s minimalist, screen-heavy interface has led to a complete redesign of the infotainment UX. The new 2026 software suite introduces a customizable content bar at the bottom of the 12.3-inch central display. This allows drivers to pin their most-used functions—such as climate controls or specific navigation shortcuts—reducing the need to dig through sub-menus while driving.

The update also refines the Driver Alert System, reducing false fatigue activations, and increases the speed-limit recognition accuracy. For those who frequently charge at home or at public stations, the new “Range Mode” button provides a one-touch calibration of the pedal mapping and climate systems to squeeze every possible kilometer out of the battery.

New “Rooms” and Aesthetic Refinements

The interior of the 2026 EX30 introduces two new design themes, or “rooms,” inspired by Nordic environments. The “Harvest” room offers a warm, light-toned aesthetic using woven recycled textiles and Nordico upholstery made from recycled PET bottles. Conversely, the “Black” interior provides a monochromatic, timeless look with dark flax decor.

These interior updates coincide with the expansion of the Black Edition trim. For the 2026 model year, the Black Edition is no longer restricted to just the Onyx Black paint; it can now be specified in Vapour Grey or Crystal White, while retaining the signature high-gloss black wheels and dark badging.

With a starting price now comfortably positioned below its previous entry point, the 2026 Volvo EX30 is no longer just a luxury niche product; it is a versatile, high-tech contender for the mainstream electric market.
