JSW Group has officially transitioned from a manufacturing giant to an independent automotive player. In a bold strategic move this morning, February 25, 2026, the company released a nationwide teaser campaign across major financial dailies like The Economic Times. The campaign, featuring a rugged, boxy SUV silhouette and the tagline “The future is calling,” serves as an open invitation for dealer partners to register interest by March 11, 2026.
While JSW is already a partner in JSW-MG Motor India, this new venture—JSW Motors Limited—will operate as an independent entity, focusing on “New Energy Vehicles” (NEVs) that bridge the gap between pure ICE and full EVs.
The Debut Model: Jetour T2 i-DM
Industry insiders confirmed today that JSW’s first product will be the Jetour T2 i-DM, a rugged 4.7-meter SUV developed in partnership with China’s Chery Automobile. Unlike the luxury hybrids currently in India, the JSW T2 is targeting the ₹30 lakh – ₹45 lakh price bracket, effectively creating a “Mainstream Plug-in Hybrid” (PHEV) segment.
- Powertrain: It pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with dual front-mounted electric motors, producing a combined 375 PS and 610 Nm of torque.
- The “EV” Mode: A 26.7 kWh battery allows for roughly 130 km of pure electric range, meaning most Indian city commutes can be handled without burning a drop of petrol.
- Road Presence: With its upright grille, vertical tailgate with a spare wheel, and squared wheel arches, the T2 is being marketed as a “lifestyle” alternative to the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Tata Safari.
Local Manufacturing & The Maharashtra Hub
JSW is not just rebadging imports. The company is investing over ₹5,000 crore in a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra.
- Localization Strategy: Production is set to begin in August 2026, with a target of 80% localization by October. This includes local assembly of battery packs and motor components to keep prices competitive.
- Network Goals: The current dealer hunt aims to establish 100 experience centers across Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities by the Diwali 2026 launch window.
Why This Strategy Works
The timing of JSW Motors’ entry is impeccable. While pure EV sales have stabilized at 5-6% of the market, the demand for hybrids is surging. By offering a PHEV with 1,100 km of total range, JSW addresses “range anxiety” while offering the tax benefits and green credentials of an electric vehicle.
What’s Next for Buyers?
Expect the official brand reveal and model name (likely a JSW-specific moniker for the T2) in April 2026. Following the SUV, a second product—likely a compact EV based on the Chery iCar V23—is rumored for a 2027 debut. For now, JSW is positioning itself to be India’s third major homegrown PV brand, standing alongside Tata and Mahindra.
