The Indian automotive market kicked off 2026 with a decisive roar from the sub-4 metre SUV segment. According to the latest industry data for January 2026, the category recorded total sales of 1,21,150 units, representing a robust 13.26% year-on-year growth. While broader market sentiment showed slight month-on-month fatigue, the compact SUV space proved to be the bedrock of domestic volume, accounting for nearly one in every four cars sold in the country.

The Tata “Power Couple”: Nexon and Punch Dominate
Tata Motors has effectively turned the segment into a two-horse race—and both horses belong to them.
- Tata Nexon / EV: The Nexon reclaimed its throne as India’s best-selling car overall, dispatching 23,365 units. This staggering 51% YoY increase was bolstered by the model crossing a historic 10 lakh cumulative sales milestone this month. Its ability to offer a “triple-threat” of Petrol, Diesel, and EV powertrains remains unmatched by rivals.
- Tata Punch / EV: Not far behind, the Punch recorded 19,257 units, a high-water mark for the micro-SUV. Interestingly, the market is already bracing for the Punch EV Facelift, which is officially slated for launch on February 20, 2026. Early reports suggest the new iteration will ditch the connected light bar for a more rugged “ICE-inspired” front fascia.
Maruti’s Consistency vs. The “Victoris” Effect
Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza secured the third podium spot with 17,486 units (up 18.5% YoY). Despite being one of the oldest designs in the top five, the Brezza’s reliability and CNG options continue to fend off newer challengers.
However, the bigger story at Maruti is the internal cannibalization. The Fronx saw a sharp 35.5% month-on-month drop (13,353 units), largely as buyers pivoted toward the newly launched Victoris—Maruti’s latest sub-4m crossover that is quickly becoming the new “it” car in the Nexa portfolio.
The Korean Counter-Offensive
Both Hyundai and Kia managed to hold their ground despite a segment becoming increasingly crowded.
- Hyundai Venue: With 12,413 units, the Venue grew by nearly 12% YoY. Hyundai is currently prepping a major Venue Facelift for later this year to counter the rising “tech-first” appeal of the Tata twins.
- Kia Sonet: The Sonet was one of the fastest growers in January, surging 52.88% to hit 10,998 units. Much of this success is attributed to the recent normalization of supply chains for the higher-spec GTX+ and X-Line trims, which command the longest waiting periods.
The New Entrants: Kylaq and Beyond
The “sophisticated” end of the market is seeing a shakeup thanks to the Skoda Kylaq. In its first full month of 2026, it recorded 3,220 units—a 159% jump from its early pilot volumes. While still a niche player, the Kylaq is successfully poaching buyers who find the Sonet or Venue too “commonplace.”
2026 Outlook
As we move into February, the narrative is shifting from “feature wars” to “safety and range.” With the upcoming Punch EV potentially sporting a 45kWh battery and Exter’s impending facelift, the sub-4m segment remains the most volatile and exciting theater in the Indian car industry.
