The European compact hatchback segment is facing a significant shakeup from the world’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer. BYD has officially broken cover on its highly anticipated Dolphin G DM-i, marking the Chinese automaker’s smallest and most accessible plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) destined for global markets.

Unlike standard global exports that are simply adapted from existing Chinese domestic market vehicles, the Dolphin G has been engineered from the ground up with European buyer preferences specifically in mind. Positioned strategically in Europe’s ultra-competitive B-segment, this pint-sized powerhouse aims to deliver the zero-emission urban usability of an electric car without forcing owners to rely entirely on public charging infrastructure.

Mastering the Architecture: The Fifth-Generation DM-i System

At the heart of the Dolphin G’s appeal is BYD’s acclaimed Dual Mode (DM-i) Super Hybrid technology. The system pairs an ultra-efficient 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a high-output front-mounted electric motor and a hybrid-optimized version of BYD’s famously safe LFP Blade Battery pack.

The powertrain is highly electric-forward. In typical urban driving, the electric motor handles nearly all propulsion duties, while the petrol engine acts strictly as an onboard generator to feed the battery pack. At higher motorway speeds, a specialized clutch connects the engine directly to the front wheels to ensure maximum thermal efficiency.

While full power ratings are still being finalized ahead of its official physical launch next month, the platform is expected to output roughly 193 kW (258 hp), drawing mechanical heavily from the recently launched Atto 2 DM-i compact crossover.

A Right-Sized Footprint Tailored for European Streets

Measuring 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, the Dolphin G DM-i sits right in the sweet spot of the European supermini class. It is roughly 130 mm shorter but 55 mm wider than the purely electric Dolphin hatchback currently on sale, creating a planted, purposeful stance on the road.

This footprint allows it to comfortably target mainstream European mainstays while bringing a unique mechanical advantage to the table:

  • The Traditional Rivals: Mainstream options like the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Renault Clio E-Tech, and Volkswagen Polo rely on conventional closed-loop hybrid or mild-hybrid setups.
  • The PHEV Advantage: The Dolphin G stands alone by offering a full plug-in architecture in this size class, delivering an expected 90 km of pure-EV range. For the vast majority of European commuters, daily driving can be done purely on cheap grid electricity.

Strategic Pricing and Tariff Deflection

BYD’s decision to aggressively launch a plug-in hybrid hatchback in Europe is highly calculated. Beyond meeting the consumer demand for long-distance flexibility, introducing a PHEV powertrain helps BYD safely bypass the steep import duties of up to 38% imposed by the European Commission on Chinese battery-electric vehicle imports.

Furthermore, rumors are swirling that the Dolphin G DM-i will eventually become one of the foundational models manufactured locally at BYD’s upcoming European production facility in Szeged, Hungary.

The Price to Beat: While exact European pricing will be formally announced at a dedicated launch ceremony in Berlin next month, early indications from UK market previewers suggest a starting price under £20,000. If achieved, it will comfortably undercut rivals like the Honda Jazz Hybrid by a massive margin, making it the cheapest plug-in hybrid on sale in Europe.

Following its European rollout, first customer deliveries are scheduled to begin by the end of summer 2026. With order books opening in the coming weeks, the Dolphin G DM-i looks poised to accelerate BYD’s market share expansion across Western Europe.
