When Mahindra launched the Thar ROXX, the “extended” wheelbase and five-door configuration were praised for their practicality. However, the Indian Army saw something else: a perfect chassis for a Light Specialist Vehicle (LSV). The newly unveiled ROXX-based ATV is the result of months of collaborative testing, designed to provide rapid mobility for small infantry teams in “no-road” zones.

    1. Engineered for Extremes: The Military Specs

The military version of the ROXX strips away the lifestyle luxuries—like the panoramic sunroof and soft-touch plastics—replacing them with high-durability, mission-critical hardware.

    • Weapon Mounts & Storage: The rear cabin has been modularized to include a 360-degree rotatable turret mount for a 7.62mm Medium Machine Gun (MMG). It also features specialized racks for anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and ammunition crates.
    • Heavy-Duty Suspension: To handle the extra weight of armor plating and equipment, the ATV uses a heavy-duty long-travel suspension with nitrogen-charged dampers, providing 20% more articulation than the civilian model.
    • Run-Flat Technology: The vehicle is equipped with specialized all-terrain tires featuring run-flat inserts, allowing the vehicle to travel up to 50 km at 40 km/h even after multiple punctures or combat damage.

    2. Performance: High-Altitude Reliability

In the rarefied air of the Himalayas, standard engines often struggle. The ROXX ATV utilizes a specially tuned version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, optimized for low-end torque and cold-start reliability in sub-zero temperatures.

    FeatureMilitary ATV Specification
    Powertrain2.2L mHawk Diesel (High-Altitude Tuned)
Transmission6-Speed Manual with a dedicated Low-Range Transfer Case
ProtectionLevel 1 Stanag-compatible underbody blast protection
RecoveryFront-mounted 4.5-ton electric winch and snorkel intake

    3. The Tactical Advantage: “Silent Stealth” Mode

A unique addition to the ROXX ATV is a dual-battery management system. This allows the vehicle to run its communication equipment, thermal imaging cameras, and radio sets for several hours without idling the engine—a critical feature for covert reconnaissance missions where silence is safety.

    4. Why the ROXX Platform?

The choice of the ROXX over the standard 3-door Thar is purely functional. The longer wheelbase provides much-needed stability for high-speed desert crossings and allows for a “Combat Medic” configuration where a stretcher can be accommodated internally—something impossible in the smaller Thar.

    The Verdict

The Mahindra Thar ROXX-based ATV is a testament to the versatility of Indian automotive engineering. By taking a successful consumer SUV and hardening it for the battlefield, Mahindra is ensuring that the Indian Army has a fast, reliable, and locally-serviceable vehicle for 21st-century border security.
