The Mahindra Thar 3-door is preparing for its most significant transformation since the current generation debuted in 2020. While the arrival of the 5-door Thar Roxx last year set a new benchmark for lifestyle SUVs, it also left the original 3-door model looking slightly dated in terms of features and refinement.
Fresh spy shots from March 2026 confirm that Mahindra is finalising a mid-cycle facelift for the 3-door legend. The test mules, often seen alongside the upcoming Scorpio-N facelift, reveal an SUV that is successfully borrowing the premium “DNA” of the Roxx to appeal to a broader, more urban audience.
A Modernized “Roxx” Face
The most striking visual update is at the front. Mahindra is moving away from the classic seven-slot grille to a double-stacked, six-slot layout inspired by the Thar Roxx.
- Lighting Signature: The old-school halogen headlamps are being replaced by circular LED projector units sitting flush with the grille. These are framed by distinctive C-shaped LED DRLs, giving the Thar a much more sophisticated “face” for night-time driving.
- Premium Stance: For the first time, the 3-door Thar is expected to offer 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels on the top-spec trims, a significant step up from the current 18-inch setup.
- Rear Refinement: At the back, the changes are subtle but effective, featuring updated LED graphics for the taillights and a slightly revised bumper.
Interior: The Tech Leap
If the exterior is about style, the interior is about a total tech overhaul. Mahindra aims to fix the “utilitarian” complaints of the current 3-door by integrating the Roxx’s premium cabin features:
- Digital Cockpit: Expect a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a matching 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster.
- Creature Comforts: The facelift is rumored to include ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, and an auto-dimming IRVM—features that were once unthinkable for a rugged off-roader.
- Mechanical Shift: One of the biggest “under-the-skin” changes is the expected switch from hydraulic to Electric Power Steering (EPS), which will make maneuvering in tight city traffic significantly easier.
Safety: Level 2 ADAS on the Horizon?
Following Mahindra’s recent safety push, the 2026 Thar facelift is likely to debut a Level 2 ADAS suite. This could include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Combined with six airbags as standard, this update would make the Thar one of the safest lifestyle SUVs in the country.
Familiar Power, Improved Dynamics
Mechanically, the Thar will stick with its reliable powertrain trio: the 1.5L Diesel (RWD), the 2.2L mHawk Diesel (4WD), and the 2.0L mStallion Turbo-Petrol. However, these engines are expected to be re-tuned for better refinement, possibly utilizing the “mGlide” suspension setup from the Roxx to reduce the infamous “bouncy” ride quality of the short-wheelbase Thar.

Expected to launch during the 2026 festive season, the Thar 3-door facelift is no longer just a weekend toy. It is evolving into a daily-driver that can handle the mall run just as easily as a mountain pass.
